 Well the Special Olympics took over Lincoln for the better part of the week. It kept us super packed with food deliveries to many of the local hotels. And a bunch of other odds and ends…it is amazing how much stuff people in hotels forget to bring with them. But now that it is all over…what is the plan for the huge countdown sign outside of Red 9? I am not sure the folks at red 9 are allowed to redo it or not…but for what? Obviously half of Nebraska would say lets do a countdown to Husker football kickoff. But maybe it should be more creative…I mean the Journal Star is already counting down the days to Husker Football kickoff.
Best idea I have heard so far is that it should be set to countdown the estimated time of completion of the new Haymarket Arena. Wondering if anyone else has any ideas?
 Over the weekend we had the opportunity to make what is casually referred to as a “hobo dinner”. Basically this is a bunch of stuff wrapped up in tin foil and then thrown on the grill. I like to think there is an art to making these but really it is super easy. If you click on the thumbnails you will see my basic ingredients. I like to make them in individual servings…but you could just throw it all in one huge tin foil wrapper.
1/4 lbs hamburger, 1/4 yellow onion sliced, 1 med potato sliced thin, 1-2 tbsp. butter, salt & pepper, heavy duty foil, the extras: Carrots, fresh or stewed tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon, whatever!
Basically you take all this stuff and throw it on the foil. I like a little butter with mine as it makes the potatoes really come to life, but you can make it fine without. I wrap mine up burrito-style and then throw it on the grill for about 20 minutes or so. It cooks very quickly and it comes out perfect every single time. Throw it on a plate and you got some simply great grub. I learned this from long ago in Boy Scouts. If you are planning on camping…make these ahead of time and freeze them. Just throw them in the bag and by the time you are ready to cook them they will still be cool and fresh.

 Get over to Lamar’s Donuts today, June 4th, for a FREE Original Glazed Donut. It is National Donut Day today! So Lamar’s and many other donut shops are giving away donuts. Krispy Kreme & Dunkin Donuts are also doing the same thing…But you would need to make a quick trip up to Omaha to take advantage of that. I saw somewhere that Russ’s Market was participating but can not find anything about it online, think I saw it in the newspaper yesterday. You do have to stop in to Lamar’s to take advantage of this deal. But in the future…we do of course deliver their donuts on the drop of a dime…So feel free to give us a call if you are stuck at work and craving a sweet donut some morning.
For those who do not know…National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday in June. In 1917, Salvation Army female volunteers known as “lassies” prepared thousands of donuts to the homesick soldiers that served in France during World War I. So there is today’s history lesson!

 Have you been there lately? In Lincoln Nebraska we have quite a few really good chain restaurants that tend to get forgotten all about at times. Boston Market happens to be one of those. Many times I drive by there and remember how great their chicken is and think…”I really am going there for lunch tomorrow”. Then needless to say I end up on the far side of town and well…forget all about that craving for their awesome chicken.
But Boston Market serves all sorts of other items. Their mac & cheese, sweet potatoes, and that creamed spinach stuff are almost unbeatable. They recently started serving sliders also. 3 for $2.99…BBQ Chicken & Cheddar, Turkey & Swiss, & Meatloaf & Cheddar. What a awesome spin on the mini-burgers. Not sure if they are really healthy for you…but I tried the Turkey & Swiss ones and they were fabulous. They have some new sauces also…I may have them throw some hot sauce on mine next time. And as always…The Bug will deliver anything on the Boston Market Menu to anywhere in Lincoln Nebraska. And yes…Waverly we deliver to you also!
 Five Guys will be open very soon. We are looking forward to it. These “guys” will be just fine downtown. Sometimes I worry about new places downtown as it can be a struggle to get a foothold with parking not being great there…and of course the lack of drive through access can be another challenge. But Five Guys has a super reputation as a great burger joint. The Omaha store has been fantastic so I have no doubt the Lincoln store is going to be awesome also. I have read that they have a double dip process for cooking their fries…guess they are crispier that way?
The Five Guys Menu is super simple. Once you order or stop in a few times you will have it memorized in no time at all…Kind of like Cane’s Chicken Fingers menu. These guys do burgers and hot dogs the same as Cane’s does chicken fingers…it is all they do and they are experts at doing it! And yes…of course we will deliver Five Guys Burgers to ANYWHERE in Lincoln…and especially to a college campus near you cause they are cheap also!

 Red-White Spring Game today at 1PM. This is our first look at this years lineup. Obviously we are playing ourselves…sometimes I think this game would be even more fun if we would agree to play a spring game in each city with another team…ie, you come play here…then we will come play there. Of course that brings up the point that we could “lose” the spring game. Whereas it is now…we win no matter what. Maybe we should bring down the UNO Mavericks for a little spring game fun. Obviously the UNL Huskers would outclass the Mavs, well at least they had better. But that would be really cool…and maybe the second string of Huskers could then return the favor and go up and play in Omaha one day. That would make this a little more exciting for sure!
